Though the people of Reole believed he could truly perform miracles, Cornello was merely performing alchemy, using a fake Philosopher's Stone, mounted on a ring he wore, to, seemingly, violate the Law of Equivalent Exchange. Fashioning himself as a prophet of Leto, the solar god of Reole, and as a miracle worker, Cornello promised riches and everlasting life, even resurrection of dead loved ones, for those who followed him. The State Military's lack of oversight in Reole, combined with the strong religious sense of the citizens (in this sense Reole is similar to Ishval), made it possible for an ambitious man named Father Cornello to institute a sort of theocratic government with himself as the unquestioned ruler. You make that call and others have made theirs.Reole (spelled Liore in the 2009 anime and Lior in the 2003 anime's English dub) is one of the first places visited by the Elric brothers in their quest for the Philosopher's Stone. Thats why it's a major theme of '03 in regards to Ed, Scar, Winry, Roy, etc with no clear universal answer for their situations which is why I love it over Mangahood so much. We've explained the reasoning of why fans sympathize or agree with '03 Scar but you don't need to view him as moral as that's a personal call often brought out due to necessity. Same thing, difference is the Amestris military would be in an even far less sympathetic light as you'd have Ishavlans civilian Hughes' and such. If FMA03 was all about Rick and Rio stopping the military to avoid being murdered as well as other non-Amestrians and wanting to return to their homeland following your logic you'd see that as justified. So you agree with Scar then? Okay cool as it is all about perspective. Oh snap you answered the previous question without me even asking it lol. If they try to murder me, my brother, or my colleagues/friends, I would hunt them down and kill them or take them in. How one navigates that fact when you or your nation is the target is the vexing question. Even after Bradley and Dante are killed Sheska writes that the military hasn't stopped it's conflicts with other nations so there is no all around easy nor bloodless path to peace here when the system is rotted. This less bloody passivity isn't as effective since it's much slower so the crimes in Lior still would've happened and all would've been killed without Scar intervening. Roy is the opposite side of this (and a better contrast than Mangahood's contextual inept, Miles) as he stays in the system to try to fix it. Maybe don't join the military if you didn't support the Ishavalan War and their continued mistreatment? Or just I don't know leave once you find out/see abuses/are given immoral orders such as in Lior which Scar advocates to Ed? I don't see what else could have been done in that situation.
